About Baroque Rome and Caravaggios Masterpieces
Discover the era that changed the face of Rome! If there is a period in art that can be said to have left its charm indelibly impressed on the city of Rome it would be the Baroque era. The itinerary begins at Trinita dei Monti. From the top we will descend the legendary stairs of the Spanish Steps the scalinata famous for its beauty and size. Extremely original in shape with a narrowing at the center which divides it in two parts it has always been the meeting place for people coming from all over the world. In the center of the square we will admire the Fontana della Barcaccia made by Pietro Bernini father of the famous Gian Lorenzo. Walking through Via Condotti we cross Piazza del Parlamento and walk to Piazza Colonna thus named after the 2nd century marble column celebrating the victories of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius over the Germanic populations. Today the north side of the square is taken by Palazzo Chigi seat of the Italian parliament. We then proceed to Piazza di Pietra with the Temple of Hadrian and Piazza della Rotonda housing the unmistakable structure of the Pantheon. The Pantheon as a building of ancient Rome has been well preserved and is a true masterpiece of architecture. Once inside our expert guide will give an explanation about its history and the architectural secrets of the building. The tour continues with a visit inside two of the most beautiful Baroque Churches Sant Ignazio di Loyola with the huge ceiling frescoes by Father Andrea Posso one of the most outstanding expressions of baroque painting and San Luigi dei Francesi with the three world-renowned cycle paintings by Caravaggio. The tour ends with a visit of the renaissance Church of Sant Agostino to admire among other things one of the most famous paintings by Caravaggio La Madonna di Loreto. By foot we can continue to explore on our own or just relax and experience this beautiful area with lovely shops nearby.
