About Excursion to Tivoli and Hadrians Villa
We start our excursion by visiting Piazza dellEsquilino one of the seven hills of Rome which provides a wondrous view of the Colosseum. Then we journey through the Via Tiburtina passing by the Castro Pretorio the Baths of Tivoli and the Lucano Bridge before finally reaching the highlight of our tour a visit to Hadrians Villa. Hadrians Villa is a beautiful imperial villa built sometime in the 2nd century by Emperor Hadrian and once greater than the center of Imperial Rome. The villa features a multitude of exquisite fountains and superbly arranged Italian flower gardens. Explore Canopus and Serapeum the villas pool and artificial grotto named after an Egyptian city where a temple was dedicated to the god Serapis showing how well-traveled Emperor Hadrian was. See the &ldquoMaritime Theatre&rdquo a round portico with a barrel vault supported by pillars and a ring-shaped pool with a central island. On the island sits a small Roman house which was probably used as a retreat from the busy life at court. The Villa is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the major tourist destinations of Italy.
